Blockstream said on Oct. 13, 2026 that multisig accounts are back in its Blockstream app, with two-key and two-of-three options for Bitcoin. NFA.
Account Types Restored
Blockstream restored two distinct multisig setups. One setup creates a two-key 2FA Protected account. The other setup creates a two-of-three account that adds a backup key held only by the user. Both options apply to Bitcoin holdings.
Users select either path when they create a new account inside the app. The choice stays available after the Oct. 13, 2026 update. The two-of-three option remains limited to Bitcoin for now.
How Keys Work
A 2FA Protected account links a device key protected by PIN to a second key stored on Blockstream servers. That server key requires two-factor authentication for access. Users approve sends through an authenticator app, email, SMS, or a phone call.
The two-of-three account keeps the same server-side 2FA without an expiration date. The user keeps the third key as a backup phrase. The backup phrase plus the device key recovers funds without waiting for server approval.
Deposit Timelocks
Each deposit begins a timelock period. After the period ends the device key can spend the funds on its own. An open-source tool supports recovery during this process. The tool stays separate from the main app for the time being.
Blockstream plans to bring recovery-tool features into the app itself. That step would remove the need for an external program.
Jade Hardware Support
Users can store their own key on a Blockstream Jade device. The Jade pairs directly with the app. This pairing keeps the user key offline while the app handles the second factor.
No Changes for Legacy Users
Holders of older multisig accounts see no difference. No migration steps apply to those accounts. The original settings remain in place.
Next Steps for Readers
Readers can open the Blockstream app and review the multisig creation flow. The blog post from Oct. 13, 2026 lists the exact options now live. Checking the multisig page on the Blockstream site shows the current feature set.
Blockstream stated that neither account type allows the company to move funds alone. The multisig structure requires the user keys for any spend. Readers who want the added backup option can create a two-of-three account on Bitcoin. The two-key 2FA Protected account suits users who prefer server-assisted recovery.
The update keeps both account types on Bitcoin. Liquid support for the two-of-three setup is listed as a future item. Existing users can continue without any action. New users now have the restored choices inside the app.
